Hunter Valley Wine Experience, $95 per person. *updated*

September is Spring in the Vineyards and one of the most wonderful times to experience ‘budburst’ (the time when vines burst into life from dormancy over winter). The Hunter Valley is the closest wine country to the centre of Sydney and boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia.  From 150 different cellar doors we have chosen two boutique wineries to visit, Brokenwood Wines and Margan Family Estate Wines that will introduce you to the internationally renowned Semillon and Shiraz wines as well as some newly introduced Italian and Spanish varietals and styles.  In addition we will lunch at the Small Winemaker’s Centre where another range of speciality wines will be matched to a gourmet spread.

There will be opportunities to learn about winemaking, experience maturation cellars and walk among the vines.

Our destination mid-morning will be the Hunter Valley Gardens where delegates can choose optional activities of walking or riding on a mini train around a spectacular range of gardens (pay-as-you-go).  The gardens will also be bursting into a colourful array of Spring blossom that will attract the photographers and insta-grammars of the group.  Another option is to enjoy a retail area with souvenirs, arts and crafts.

Your host for the day is Karen Macalister-Hohnen, DipWSET (XSJSS Alumni 1971) who came from Fiji in 1978 and by chance entered the Australian wine industry in 1980.  I always believe that the aromas of Fijian flowers, fruit and the multicultural cuisine were the building blocks of my 38 year career in the wine and hospitality industries.  I now teach at the Sydney Wine Academy, Ryde TAFE.
